Development began on Yakuza 3 right after Kenzan finished up. According to Nagoshi, in the two years since Yakuza 2 (in-game time has progressed at the same rate as real world time), Kiryu and Haruka have, for some reason or another, ended up way down in the south. Yakuza 2 added a new location to the game world, a version of Kamiyacho located in the Osaka area. Expected characters will return for the sequel (we'll keep from telling you who those are, since it's likely that many in the English speaking world won't play Yakuza 2 until later this year). The game returns to Kamiyacho, the setting of the original and the primary setting of the sequel, and features Kazuma Kiryu in the main character role once again.

While Kenzan took the series into Edo era Japan, Yakuza 3 is a full sequel to Yakuza 2 and tells the story of what happened after that title. As with Kenzan, the sequel is coming to the PlayStation 3.

Unlike the first PS3 Yakuza game, which was known in Japan as Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan (Ryu ga Gotoku being the Japanese name for the Yakuza series), this one has the actual "3" in the title and is formally known as Ryu ga Gotoku 3. The real Yakuza 3 made its debut in this week's Famitsu.
